When buying or building a home one aspect that can change the entire appearance is that of roof shingles. When the shingles are in excellent condition, the house looks polished and great. However, when the shingles start to fall off or become loose, not only does the house look bad, but also you are now at risk for leaks that could cause serious and expensive damage.
Many people like the clean, almost sophisticated look that a shingle roof creates. If you are thinking about adding a shingle roof to your home or repairing an existing one, there are three things to consider. For a rectangular shaped roof with no dormers, valley, or any other kind of obstruction, three steps that need to be established to include striking the bond lines, the overhand, and the horizontal lines.
Starting with the overhang, if you are putting on a shingle roof, you need to know how far the shingles are going to have over the bottom and sides of the roof deck, called the eaves and rakes respectively. The best situation is where the trim is installed along the edges of the roof. If you plan to use a metal drip edge, that too needs to be in place. If this is your situation, you want this overhang to be one inch along the eaves and rakes. You will discover that the majority of manufacturers will recommend a one-quarter to three eighths inch as a way of reducing the wind causing the edge of the roof to snag.
Keep in mind that typically, the older homes usually need more than the recommended three eighths inch to get a straight line. If you find that your roof has irregularities in the line of the fascia and rake board, the one-inch would provide the needed security and straight line without the shingles being blown off the roof.
Keep in mind that when cutting shingles, because they can be cut very easily, you need to be careful. In fact, you would be better off cutting the shingle a bit too long than too short. After all, you can always cut the shingles down if needed. As you shop for shingles, you will find many different types. For example, the three-tab asphalt shingles run three feet long with one-foot tabs that have special grooves where you cut. These grooves create a nice look and helps water to roll off the roof better during rain. As the shingles are placed on the roof, you want every other course to line up over another shingle. Additionally, the grooves of the course should fall between the middle of the tab for the shingle to the side, above, and below.
When you get ready to install the shingles on your roof, start with horizontal courses on the bond line and then alternate between the two bond lines. Before you put that first nail in, measure and strike the horizontal lines. This will ensure you are placing the shingles correctly.
One thing you need to consider in relation to shingle roofs is that some home associations and cities do not allow them because of high fire potential. Because the roofs are all wood, this is one drawback so before you start installing a shingle roof, check with your home association if you have one, talk to our insurance company, and ask the fire station if shingle roofs are allowed where you live.
