Making remodeling changes to your dining room is a gratifying way to improve your home. Using some creativity, you can create a room where family and friends will love to gather. If you prefer a cozy dining room with country charm, many projects are easy and inexpensive to complete. Instead of staying with safe wall colors of white, off-white, or ivory, go bold. Paint your dining room walls a tangy orange citrus color and if your woodwork and furniture is dark, change it to white.

For window treatments, if you can find what you need in the store, that will save you some time but if not, you will want to make them. For this room, you will need two extra wide panels, each sewn with alternating stripes of the tangy orange and then orange of three shades lighter. The result will be dramatic and charming. Hang from ornate rods and pull both panels back with a tangy orange tassel. Then add coordinating artwork and the right accents with greens, ivory, and dark orange, and you will have an amazing room.

Another dining room remodeling project that will probably surprise you is to paint a rug. Again, start with the walls by adding wainscoting of a medium green, and painting the wall above a green that is about two or three shades lighter. Using various colors of yellow, green, and gold, create accents and choose a soft buttery yellow slipcover for each of your chairs. Now for the rug, you want to purchase sisal.

Sisals are perfect for painting since they absorb paint so well. For an 8 x 10-foot rug, you will need approximately one gallon of paint for each color chosen. If your budget allows, you want to choose five to six different colors to include soft to medium yellow, two shades of green to match the wall, and touches of wine, and gold. Visit your home improvement store and purchase a paint pad for each color. Using designs in magazines or those found on the Internet, you want to start by putting a plastic drop cloth underneath the carpet and then using a marker to draw your design. To get the cleanest lines, follow the natural weave of the rug. Work with one color at a time, allowing each to dry before starting the next color.

Dip the paint pad into a shallow pan of paint. Drag the pad over the rim to make sure the paint is evenly distributed. Using the paint pad, press it into the rug's fibers, without using an actual brushing motion, and allow the rug to dry overnight before moving to the next color. Once all the colors are on, the rug will need to dry for three days before setting it under your table.
