Interior design is changing the look and atmosphere or a room by using your creativity and imagination. Although most interior decoration is done by a professional, you too can decorate your home with some practical skills and a little knowledge of how to achieve your desired goal. The purpose is often to take an old, drab and out-dated room and completely change it to make is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The result is a beautiful room that feels and looks fresh and new.
Most professional interior designers work with a specific style and some will work with both commercial and residential rooms. For a commercial designer, it is important that the designer not only understand design but also the specific business and industry needing the upgrade. For a residential designer, there is a different focus with it being on the architecture of the home and the homeowners personal preference.
If you are interested in becoming an interior designer, you will need to have some special training and schooling. Although this is a competitive market to get into, once you have the skills and knowledge, you can begin building your portfolio and start by building clients. You might consider focusing your design on a specific area of the home at first and then expanding your work. For instance, you might start by working on bedrooms or bathrooms, or living rooms and kitchens. The choice is really yours and of course, you can always expand your decorating base or stay focused on a specific design concept.
Remember, the most important aspect of interior designing is satisfying the client. Additionally, to be a qualified and successful designer, you need three things:
Artistic and technical skills
As a designer, you need to know how to take any space and create a plan into something visual that can be presented to the client. You need to be knowledgeable about fabrics and materials, which would include ceiling, flooring, window treatments, cabinets/wood, and so on. You will need to know how to create a space that is pleasing to the client and furnish the space appropriately.
To be a designer means that you need an understanding of color, lighting, texture, and everything needed to create the look and feel that meets the clients needs. You will also need to understand structural requirements for safety and health issues. This means to know about current building codes and technical aspects.
Additionally, you need to be comfortable meeting with potential and confirmed clients and understanding that flexibility and change are always a part of the process. Although you might have a recommendation for a countertop, the client may not like what you chose. You cannot take the change personal but rather be open to change. Organizing and creating a business plan is also important, as you will need to have the ability to manage your time and vendors schedules. You will have deadlines to meet for both vendors and the clients.
Being an interior decorator is a rewarding and exciting career. Keep in mind that it will take a little time to build clientele but the hard work, determination, and wait will be worth it. Starting out, you can expect to make around $30,000 a year but as your business grows, you can work your way to $100,000 or better. Best of all, you have the opportunity to meet some incredible people and change their lives and home for the better.
